Lace-making is an ancient craft that first gained popularity in the 15th and early 16th centuries. True lace is made when a thread is looped, twisted or braided to other threads independently from a backing fabric.
Lace was first used by the clergy of the early Roman Catholic Church as part of the vestments in religious ceremonies. It wasn’t until the 16th century that lace became popular as a “secular” fashion and the trend spread in the northwestern part of Europe.
Nowadays, we’ve been using lace in all kinds of clothing and home decor. Of course, you can even use it in other crafts projects – and we found a tutorial by Dosfamily that will show you how to make a lamp that is made out of lace doilies! The link follows after our additional ideas.
Here are some more ideas that you can do with this DIY project:
1. Colored Lamps – Add some color to your white lace doilies by dyeing them. Create a pastel shade by using less dye. If you want your lace to take on a more vibrant shade, use more dye. Once you’re done, you will now have colored lace doilies that will go well with your color scheme! If you want to be more adventurous, try a tie dye pattern!
2. Interesting See-Through Vase – You can use the techniques shown in the tutorial to make a unique vase for your faux flowers! It will add such an interesting touch to your room decor. Grab a few of your favorite faux flowers and you’re good to go! You can also use it to display your makeup brushes, and even school supplies!
3. Centerpiece Light – Create a really nice centerpiece for your table by cutting a circle on the top of your lace doily lamp. Get a battery powered LED light. Turn the lace doily upside down and place it over the light. You will now have a unique looking centerpiece that will surely delight your guests! Stick some flowers in some areas for a lovely touch.
